Does this sound familiar?

  • It makes the startup sound, but there's no picture on the TV
  • It won't turn on, or it starts and then shuts off after a few seconds
  • The disc drive is loud, won't read discs or won't eject them
  • It gets very hot, or you see an overheating warning
  • Updates fail, or it's stuck on the green loading screen

Common Xbox problems

HDMI ports. If the console boots with its usual sound and the TV stays dark, read about Xbox HDMI port repair. It's a repair we do at the bench, and it's far less expensive than a new console.

Power supply. The Series X, the Series S and later Xbox One models have their power supply inside the case. If the console won't turn on at all, or shuts off seconds after starting, the supply is one of the first things we check. Power surges can cause this, particularly during Minnesota's summer storms, so a surge protector is a good idea.

Disc drives. Discs that don't read or spin noisily are common on consoles that stand upright. If you use the disc drive a lot, take a look at our disc drive repair page.

Heat. The Series X draws air up through the case and out the top. When it's stuffed into a closed cabinet, heat has nowhere to go. A dusty Xbox One will also run hot and loud.

A word about the green screen

A console stuck on the green Xbox startup screen usually means a software issue or a failing internal drive. Sometimes a system restore clears it up. If the drive has failed, it may need replacing. Whichever it turns out to be, we'll explain what we found and what happens to your data.

Fast, friendly great service. Pleasant to work with, knowledgeable and efficient.

Questions we get a lot

Which Xbox consoles do you fix?

Series X, Series S, Xbox One, One S and One X. Older consoles may be possible too, so call and ask if you have something else.

Do you repair Xbox controllers?

Yes. Stick drift, bad bumpers and worn thumbsticks are common. See our controller repair page.

My Xbox won't turn on at all. What should I try first?

Unplug the power cord from both ends, wait a minute or two, plug it back in, and try another wall outlet. If it's still dead, the internal power supply might be the problem, and that's often repairable.

What if my console is stuck updating?

Xbox has a built-in recovery tool. If you've tried it or aren't comfortable trying it, bring the console in. We'll be careful with your installed games and tell you before doing anything that could erase them.

Bring it by. We'll take a look.
