Does this sound familiar?
- The console won't take a disc, or it pushes the disc right back out
- You get read errors or "unrecognized disc" messages
- You hear grinding, clicking or a loud whirring when a disc spins
- A disc is stuck inside, and it won't eject
- The eject button does nothing
What goes wrong in a disc drive
A disc drive is the most mechanical part of a console, with a motor, a moving laser and little gears and belts. Rubber belts stretch and slip over time, and this is why a disc will refuse to load, or the tray won't take it. Dust on the laser lens can cause read errors, and moving a console while a disc is spinning can damage both. If your console grinds whenever it's moved, that's probably what happened.
Standing a console upright or laying it flat is usually fine, but it should be steady. Vibration from a shaky shelf isn't good for a drive, and neither are kids moving it around while a game's in.
The repair
We open the drive, and look at the belt, gears and laser. Often it's a matter of cleaning the lens, replacing a belt, or adjusting something that's slipped out of place. If the laser itself has failed, we'll let you know the options for your console. On some consoles, a replacement drive board has to be matched to the original.
We test it with several discs before you take it back. If you've got a favorite game that started all this, bring it along, and we'll make sure it plays.
If you'd rather stop using discs
A digital library is also an option, and you might not need the drive repaired if you've already moved on from discs. We can talk through that too. There's no reason to fix something you won't use.
Fast, friendly great service. Pleasant to work with, knowledgeable and efficient.
Questions we get a lot
How can I get a stuck disc out?
Many consoles have a manual eject. PS5 and PS4 have their own methods, and Xbox has a small manual release hole. Don't force anything with a screwdriver. If you aren't comfortable trying, bring it in and we'll get it out safely.
Is it the disc or the drive?
Try a few other discs. If just one disc fails, it's probably that disc, and a gentle wipe from the center outward with a soft cloth may help. If all of them fail, the drive is the likely problem.
Can a PS5 disc drive be replaced?
A PS5's disc drive is paired to its console, so you can't just swap in a drive from another one without extra work. Often we repair the drive that's already there. We'll explain what yours needs.
Can you repair a scratched disc?
A light resurfacing can help some discs, but deep scratches may be permanent. Call and ask if you have a disc you love that won't load.
Do I need to bring a game?
It helps. Bring the disc that was having trouble and one that you know was working before, so we can compare.
