Does this sound familiar?
- Pressing the power button does nothing, or it just clicks
- It starts, but there's no picture on the monitor
- Blue screens or sudden restarts
- A new grinding, clicking or whining noise from the case
- It takes forever to start, and programs freeze
Why desktops are worth repairing
A desktop is one of the most repairable things in your house. Its parts are standard, there's room to work inside, and almost anything that fails can be replaced by itself. Power supplies, memory, hard drives and fans all wear out, and swapping one of them often puts the computer right back to normal.
Power problems usually come from the power supply. A computer that won't start after a storm may have taken a surge, and it's often just the supply that's gone. Random restarts can come from overheating, a failing drive or memory, and we test each one instead of guessing.
Keep the old files
If it's the computer where all your family's photos live, please tell us that when you bring it in. We'll take extra care, and we can talk about setting up a backup so one failed drive can't cost you those pictures. An external drive is an easy start, and a cloud backup gives you a second copy somewhere else.
At the shop or at your house
Lugging a tower to the car isn't hard for everybody, and setting it back up can be even worse, especially when you're not sure what plugs in where. Take a photo of the back before unplugging it if you're bringing it in. Or skip the trip and we'll come to you. Learn about on-site computer repair.

Questions we get a lot
Do I need to bring the monitor and keyboard?
Usually, just the tower. If your problem is with the monitor or with something that's plugged in, bring that along too. If moving it is a hassle, ask about a house call.
My computer is ten years old. Is it worth fixing?
It might be. Desktops are easy to repair and upgrade, and a new solid-state drive makes a huge difference. If it's too old to run current software safely, we'll tell you, and we can move your files to a new computer.
It's clicking and I'm worried about my files. What should I do?
Turn it off and stop trying to restart it. A clicking hard drive can get worse every time it spins up. See our data recovery page, and bring it in.
Do you repair all-in-one computers?
Yes, though they're built more like big laptops and are trickier to open. Call first if it's heavy, and we can talk through the problem.
