Does this sound familiar?
- The internet is fine in one room but useless in another
- Video calls freeze and games lag when everyone's home
- A new router or mesh system is still in its box
- A printer or smart TV keeps losing the connection
- You have no idea what your Wi-Fi password is
Why Wi-Fi dies in certain rooms
Your Wi-Fi signal has to travel through walls, floors and appliances. Older Minnesota homes with plaster walls and basements with concrete foundations can be especially hard on it. A router that's stuck in a basement corner, or that's been shoved behind the TV, may be struggling. Sometimes the best thing we do all day is move a router six feet.
More devices are also on your network than you might think. Phones, tablets, TVs, doorbells, thermostats and game consoles all compete for the same signal, and an older router can have a hard time keeping up during homework and movie time.
What we do on a visit
We check your internet connection coming into the house, then walk through the rooms where you've had trouble, testing as we go. From there, we'll tell you what's worth doing. That might be changing settings, placing the router somewhere better, setting up mesh units, or running a wired connection.
Before we leave, we make sure your important devices are connected. We'll also give you your password in writing so you can stick it on the fridge, and we'll change default logins so your network is more secure.
Keeping it safe
We can turn on current security settings, set up a separate guest network so visitors don't have your main password, and make sure your router's software is up to date. It takes little time, and it matters more than most people realize.
Fast, friendly great service. Pleasant to work with, knowledgeable and efficient.
Questions we get a lot
Do I need a new router?
Not always. Sometimes moving the router, changing settings or adding a wired access point does the job. If yours is old enough that it's holding you back, we'll tell you, and we can suggest what's worth buying.
Is my internet slow, or is it my Wi-Fi?
Those are different problems. We test both. If the connection coming into your house is the trouble, you'll know what to tell your provider and won't waste money on new equipment.
Can you run cables?
Tell us what you're hoping to do when you call. A wired connection to a home office or TV can make a big difference, and we'll talk through what's practical for your house.
Can you set up parental controls?
Yes. Most routers have some tools for this. We can help set up bedtime schedules and content filters, and we'll show you how to change them later.
